Bands were amazing. Sound engineering was terrible.
Brad Williams and Killing Joke both put on fantastic shows, but the sound of the venue was the worst I’ve ever experienced. Much was lost as the opener, Killing Joke, and Brad Williams seemed to be in top form.
I wish I could rate the performance separately from the sound. Performance = 5 stars Sound = 1 Star. Brad Williams seemed to be in top form and I cannot wait to see them again, just not at this venue.
I don’t have high expectations for the sound at an arena show, but I would much rather have a little less volume versus so much volume that lyrics, guitar work, and other details are lost to overwhelming bass and sound reflections.
The fifth row of section 309 were the best available seats when I logged into Ticketmaster at the very second they went on sale, but we didn’t have great seats. These seats should really not be sold if they get all the ill effects of arena sound.
I brought my Hearos ear plugs because I anticipated some degree of bad sound at this venue, but they only reduced the volume. I would have preferred less volume to an overwhelming amount, especially with a technical band like Brad Williams. Most mid range and high frequencies were not distinguishable due to overpowering low frequencies.
This is not an old man rant about high volume. Imagine if you set up two stereo systems, side by side, in a concrete room. That would be a good approximation of what this concert sounded like. One system plays only bass frequencies, and the other plays guitar, drums, vocals, etc. Turn the bass stereo up to “ten” and only turn the other stereo up to “five."
